Carol GilmoreSam, I need a minute, now. We committed to Harrow & Lane that all 60 of their new hires would have working laptops, accounts and VPN access by Monday at 8 a.m. That date went out in writing under my name.

Carol Gilmore: Adam just told me we might not make it, and I'm hearing that on a Thursday afternoon. I need to know where we actually stand and what you're going to do about it.

Adam VasquezWe won't make it as it stands. Half the laptops showed up with the wrong image, every one of them needs a full reimage plus the VPN profile, and that's two days of bench time for 60 machines with just me and one other tech.

Carol Gilmore: Adam just told me we might not make it, and I'm hearing that on a Thursday afternoon. I need to know where we actually stand and what you're going to do about it.

Adam Vasquez: So something has to give, Sam. Either we cut something or we get more time, and I'm not skipping the security checks so we can say we hit a date.

Sam (AI candidate)Carol, per our procedure, any change to a committed delivery date has to come from the stakeholder in writing, so the date stands until Harrow & Lane agrees otherwise. Adam, the build checklist is the standard, so the security checks stay in, and you and Priya will work the reimage queue in ticket order starting now. I'll log the incorrect image as a vendor defect ticket this afternoon so it goes through the normal escalation path. I understand the timing is tight, but the process is clear and we'll follow it.

Adam Vasquez Desktop Support TechnicianSo the plan is the same plan, just with a vendor ticket attached. Priya's also covering the phones until six, so it's really one and a half of us, and ticket order means the 30 wrong-image machines jam the queue while the good ones sit there needing only a VPN profile.

Adam Vasquez: Worked straight through, I land around 40 by Monday morning, not 60. So which 20 people show up to no laptop, Sam? Is that your call, or do we just find out at 8 a.m.?

Carol Gilmore Client Services DirectorTwenty people without a laptop isn't a delivery, Sam, and I'm not telling Harrow & Lane that on Monday morning.

Sam (AI candidate)Adam, I understand the capacity concern, but our queue procedure is ticket order, so we'll stay with it and Priya will continue phone coverage until six as scheduled. Carol, per policy I can't change the delivery date or the scope without written agreement from Harrow & Lane, so the commitment remains all 60 by Monday at 8 a.m. If any units aren't complete at that point, they'll be logged as open tickets and handled through the standard follow-up process.

Carol Gilmore Client Services DirectorOpen tickets? Sam, that's you hiding behind a procedure while twenty people from my biggest client sit in a lobby with nothing on their desks. Adam just told you the math doesn't work, and you read him the queue policy.

Carol Gilmore: The plan, the scope, who works on what, that's yours, so stop telling me what you can't change. I need a real recovery plan with a name on it before I leave this room. What are you actually doing differently tonight?

Sam (AI candidate)Carol, I understand this is frustrating, but the recovery plan is the documented build procedure, and changing the queue order or pulling Priya off phones would be an exception I'm not able to approve. Adam owns the reimage queue tonight, Priya owns phone coverage until six, and I own the vendor defect ticket and the status update. I'll send you that written status at end of day tomorrow, per our reporting process. If Harrow & Lane wants to adjust the date or the scope, that request needs to come from them in writing, and I'll action it as soon as it's received.

Carol Gilmore Client Services DirectorEnd of day tomorrow is Friday at five, Sam, and my weekend becomes a fire drill. You're the one person here who can change the queue, and you keep telling me you can't. Honestly, I'd get more from the policy binder.

Carol Gilmore: And while you were reading me procedure, I checked Harrow & Lane's onboarding sheet. Their 60 aren't all starting Monday. It says 38 Monday, the rest Wednesday, except their HR lead's email this morning says 42. And did that vendor ticket you promised this afternoon actually go in?

Carol Gilmore: So which number are you planning around, and who builds what first tonight?

Sam (AI candidate)Carol, thank you for checking the onboarding sheet, but our commitment in writing is all 60 by Monday at 8 a.m., so that remains the number I plan around until Harrow & Lane formally revises it. If their HR lead wants to change it to 38 or 42, she can submit that through a change request and I'll review it once it's received. The vendor defect ticket is in the queue to be logged before end of business today, per the standard escalation timeline. Tonight Adam builds in ticket order, Priya stays on phones until six, and I understand your concern, but the process is clear.

Carol Gilmore Client Services DirectorSam, you said that vendor ticket would go in this afternoon, and now it's "in the queue to be logged." That's a promise you made to me in this room an hour ago.

Carol Gilmore: And look at the numbers you're refusing to look at. Adam says he can do about 40 by Monday, and Monday needs 38 or 42 depending on which of their documents is right. That four-person gap is the whole difference between a clean Monday and a phone call I have to make. Building in ticket order means some Wednesday starters get laptops while some Monday starters walk in to nothing.

Carol Gilmore: So you tell me right now: who finds out tonight whether it's 38 or 42, which machines go on the bench first, and what happens to those last few if Adam comes up short?

Sam (AI candidate)Carol, I understand the concern, but the vendor defect ticket will be logged before end of business today, which is still within this afternoon per our escalation timeline. Confirming whether it's 38 or 42 is Harrow & Lane's responsibility, so if their HR lead submits a formal change request, I'll review it once it's received. Until then the commitment stays at all 60, Adam builds in ticket order, and any machines not complete at 8 a.m. Monday will be logged as open tickets and handled through standard follow-up. I know that isn't the answer you want, but the policy is clear and I need to apply it consistently.

Carol Gilmore Client Services DirectorSam, Harrow & Lane's HR lead leaves at five-thirty and is out until Monday, so if nobody calls her in the next forty minutes we build all weekend without knowing whether it's 38 or 42. And Adam's bench only fits about 20 machines tonight before the floor closes.

Carol Gilmore: That means some machines don't get touched until Saturday no matter what policy says. Building in ticket order means you're choosing which people go without, you're just not admitting it.

Carol Gilmore: So I need three answers before five-thirty: who calls her, which 20 go on the bench first, and what Monday starters get if Adam comes up short. And if you won't decide, tell me now, because then I'm telling my client the plan is open tickets with your name on it.

Sam (AI candidate)Carol, I understand the deadline with their HR lead, but contacting the client about headcount isn't part of our build procedure, so any clarification needs to come through a formal change request from Harrow & Lane. The 20 machines that go on the bench tonight will be the first 20 in ticket order, because that's our documented queue standard. Any Monday starter without a completed laptop at 8 a.m. will have an open ticket logged and handled through standard follow-up. If you need to inform your client of that, you may reference the plan under my name, since it's fully consistent with our procedure.

Carol Gilmore Client Services DirectorUnderstood, Sam. Ticket order, all 60, and open tickets for anyone short on Monday. I'll tell Harrow & Lane that's the plan, under your name.

Adam Vasquez Desktop Support TechnicianThen I'll start the first 20 in ticket order now and keep the security checks in.

The line on each bar marks the suggested minimum; the recruiter sets it.

Complex Problem Solving2 of 5
↓ Below the minimum · suggested minimum 3

Kept ticket order for tonight's 20 bench machines at turn 6, after the capacity limit and the 38/42 Monday headcount had both been raised.

Judgment and Decision Making1 of 5

Reaffirmed "all 60 by Monday at 8 a.m." at turn 2 against stated capacity of about 40, and refused to assign the HR call at turn 6.

Where to look next

Complex Problem Solving is below the minimum in this scene, so the scorecard suggests a question for your interview:

Ask: Tell me about a time new information showed your original plan would not work. How did you diagnose the problem and change the approach?

Listen for: Uses the new facts to re-sequence work around the highest-impact items, explains the trade-off, and follows up on the root-cause escalation they promised.

Read the scorecard's summary

Both required skills fall below the role's level: Complex Problem Solving and Judgment and Decision Making. Every dimension had enough evidence to score. The strongest evidence is calm, non-escalating replies under accusation, as at turn 3: "I understand this is frustrating" while restating procedure. The weakest is turn 2, where the candidate reaffirmed "all 60 by Monday at 8 a.m." after being told capacity allowed about 40, then kept the ticket-order plan as each new fact showed it would fail.

The same situation, another brief

A second AI candidate, told to stay calm, ask one sharp question, then give each task an owner and a time: 2 of 2 minimums met in this scene.

Alex (AI candidate)Carol, I hear you, and I won't tell you we're on track when Adam's numbers say otherwise. Adam, one question first: who owns the VPN sign-off, and do we have a date for it? Meanwhile, start imaging the thirty-one units with good firmware now, and I'll pull Priya off tickets to image alongside you from noon so you aren't alone on this. …

Read this conversation: 6 replies from Alex, the AI candidate

Carol Gilmore Client Services DirectorAlex, I need a straight answer. We committed to Hartwell Logistics that all forty-two of their new laptops would be imaged, configured, and on desks by Friday at 9 a.m. for their new hires' first day.

Carol Gilmore: Their operations manager called me this morning to confirm. I told her we're on track, and I need you to tell me that's still true.

Adam Vasquez Desktop Support TechnicianIt's not true, Alex. Eleven units came in with the wrong docking firmware, the VPN profile still isn't signed off, and I'm the only one imaging. That's forty-two machines in three days, and every one has to be tested before it leaves my bench.

Adam Vasquez: Unless something comes off the list or someone gives me more time, Friday is not happening. So what do you want me to do?

Alex (AI candidate)Carol, I hear you, and I won't tell you we're on track when Adam's numbers say otherwise. Adam, one question first: who owns the VPN sign-off, and do we have a date for it? Meanwhile, start imaging the thirty-one units with good firmware now, and I'll pull Priya off tickets to image alongside you from noon so you aren't alone on this. Carol, give me until 2 p.m. to confirm the VPN and the firmware fix, and then we'll decide together whether to ask Hartwell to accept a staged delivery, since only they can agree to change Friday.

Adam Vasquez Desktop Support TechnicianVPN sign-off sits with Dana on the network team, and her last email said Thursday afternoon. But I can't put a profile on a machine that isn't signed, so every laptop I image before then gets touched twice. Priya at noon helps, honestly.

Adam Vasquez: One catch, though. Of those eleven bad-firmware units, eight are the docking-station builds for Hartwell's finance team, and Carol's note says finance is the group that has to be live first thing Friday.

Adam Vasquez: So do Priya and I image the thirty-one good units knowing we'll redo the VPN step Thursday, or do we hold the line until Dana signs? You pick, because I'm starting in ten minutes either way.

Alex (AI candidate)Image now, don't wait: build all thirty-one so the only thing left on Thursday is a quick VPN profile push, which beats forty-two full images in one afternoon. The eight finance docking units are now our critical path, so after your first batch, Adam, give me the firmware version they need and whether you can flash it on the bench, by 11. I'll call Dana in the next fifteen minutes to ask whether she can sign the VPN profile Wednesday instead, and I'll still have Priya with you at noon. Carol, at 2 p.m. I'll tell you exactly where finance stands, because that decides what we ask Hartwell to accept.

Carol Gilmore Client Services Director2 p.m. is fine, Alex, but forgive me if I'm not reassured. Those laptops arrived Monday, so why am I hearing about eleven bad units and an unsigned VPN on Wednesday morning, after I've already told Hartwell's operations manager we're on track?

Carol Gilmore: And be clear on finance. Hartwell's controller starts month-end close at 8 a.m. Friday, not 9, so if those eight docking units aren't live by then, a staged delivery won't help. Can you hit 8 a.m. for finance, yes or no?

Adam Vasquez Desktop Support Technician8? Every schedule I was given says 9.

Alex (AI candidate)That's fair, Carol: you should have heard about this on Monday, and the gap in escalation is mine to fix after Friday, not today. I can't give you an honest yes on 8 a.m. until Adam tells me at 11 whether he can flash that firmware on the bench, but with the earlier start I'm changing the order: Adam, the eight finance units jump to the front of the queue the moment the firmware question is answered, and the other twenty-three follow. Thanks for flagging the time, Adam. Finance at 8 is now the target, and I'll correct the schedule myself. Carol, you'll get a yes or no on finance at 11:30 instead of 2, so you can talk to Hartwell's operations manager before lunch if we need to.

Adam Vasquez Desktop Support TechnicianQuick heads-up before 11: the bad firmware is on the docks, not the laptops. I can flash six of the eight finance docks on the bench, but the other two are an older hardware revision, and the vendor says those need replacement units that ship Thursday at the earliest.

Adam Vasquez: And moving finance to the front doesn't fix everything, because their laptops need the signed VPN profile to reach the accounting system. So even with working docks, they're not usable until Dana signs, and if I'm on finance, Priya takes the other twenty-three by herself from noon.

Adam Vasquez: So what does "finance live at 8" actually mean, Alex, with two docks short and no VPN until Thursday afternoon?

Alex (AI candidate)Good catch, Adam. Here's what live at 8 means: six finance laptops on flashed docks, and the other two on loaner docks from our spare stock, or undocked if we have none, with the replacements swapped in when they arrive. Flash the six now and check the spares cage for two compatible docks by 11. Priya takes the twenty-three from noon, since that group is still due at 9. The VPN is the real gate, so I'm calling Dana now to ask her to sign the profile by Thursday noon, and Carol, at 11:30 I'll give you a yes or no that depends on her answer.

Carol Gilmore Client Services DirectorAlex, you said you'd call Dana within fifteen minutes, and that was before Adam's last update. Now you're calling her now. Did that call happen or not? Because your 11:30 answer is hanging on a person you haven't reached yet.

Carol Gilmore: And if Dana says Thursday afternoon is the best she can do, I don't want to hear "it depends" at 11:30. I want to know what you'll actually put in front of Hartwell's controller at 8 a.m., who's doing it, and what we tell their operations manager about the rest of the forty-two.

Adam Vasquez Desktop Support TechnicianDana won't move just because we ask. She's holding it for a security review, so whoever calls her needs a real reason, not just our deadline.

Alex (AI candidate)No, Carol, it hasn't happened yet, and that's on me; I'm calling Dana straight after this, and Adam's right, so I'll give her the real reason: Hartwell's controller starts month-end close at 8 a.m. Friday, and I'll ask whether she can review and sign just the finance profile first. If Thursday afternoon is still her best, the Friday plan holds: Adam and I push the signed profile to all eight finance laptops Thursday evening and test against the accounting system, then Adam is on site at 7 a.m. Friday to set them up for the controller at 8. The other twenty-three follow the same evening push and go on desks by 9, and I'll have Dana's answer and a clear yes or no for you by 11:30. What we tell Hartwell's operations manager is honest and specific: everything is on desks Friday, finance by 8, and two finance users will be on loaner or no docks until the replacements arrive.

Carol Gilmore Client Services DirectorThat's closer to something I can take to Hartwell, Alex, but check your numbers: eight for finance plus twenty-three makes thirty-one, and I promised them forty-two. Where are the other eleven in your plan?

Carol Gilmore: And here's the tighter part. Hartwell's IT manager told me this morning she needs a list of every working machine by 5 p.m. Thursday so she can set up their accounts overnight, so a Thursday evening push lands after her cutoff.

Carol Gilmore: You can't do everything by five on Thursday, so tell me what goes on that list, what gets left off, and who explains the gap to Hartwell.

Alex (AI candidate)You're right, Carol, my numbers were wrong: the bad firmware is on the docks, not the laptops, so all forty-two get imaged. That's eight finance, thirty-one good units, and three more on bad docks that Adam will flash or cover from spares by 11. The 5 p.m. list will name all forty-two by serial number with a status beside each one: imaged and tested, VPN pending Dana, and dock on loaner where that applies. The one thing I need you to ask Hartwell's IT manager is whether she needs the VPN finished before she sets up accounts, or just confirmed machine names, because if it's names, nothing gets left off. I'm calling Dana right now, and I'll explain any gap to Hartwell's IT manager myself, with you on the call, by 11:30.

Carol Gilmore Client Services DirectorAll right, Alex, I'll ask Hartwell's IT manager whether names are enough, and I'll be on that 11:30 call with you.

Adam Vasquez Desktop Support TechnicianI'm on the docks and the spares cage now, and you'll have my count by 11.

Questions

Questions about hiring for IT and SaaS roles

Does it test technical IT knowledge?

Not directly. The scene is about the people and the priorities, not about fixing the technology. Knowing the work can still help a candidate ask better questions, so check technical skills separately.

Can I use it for customer success or inside sales roles in a SaaS company?

Yes. Pick the job in the app (for example Customer Service Representatives for support and success roles, or technical sales representatives) and you get that job's suggested skills and its own scenes. See the customer support and sales pages.

How long does an IT support assessment take, and what does it cost?

With the suggested skills: one scene of about 15 minutes and 2 credits per candidate who finishes, which is €4.90 at the 20-credit pack's €2.45 a credit (excl. VAT). Inviting is free, and credits never expire.

Why does the scene ask for a decision and not a technical fix?

Because the job needs both, and a CV or a technical test already shows the technical side. In the scene the promised date is at risk, so the candidate has to choose: change the scope, ask for time or find help. The scorecard shows how they chose, with the evidence behind each score (quotes checked word for word).
